Robert B. Harris

Robert Brown Harris, 91, of Florence, S.C. died Monday, January 16, 2012 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence. He was born in Florence, S.C. by Dr. Frank McLeod. Robert was a son of the late Claude E. Harris, Sr. and Elizabeth Oglesby Harris.

Robert was educated in Florence, the University of South Carolina, and Atlanta Aquatic School. He served our country in the Navy, retired from the railroad and was a recipient of the Four Chaplains Award. He may be best remembered for teaching swimming to generations of Florentines.

He is survived by one brother, John C. Harris of Durham, N.C.; two treasured nieces, Libby Harris Padgett (caretaker) and Jane Alsbrook Woodberry, and several nieces, nephews and cousins: Lydia McGee of Durham, NC, Cal Harris of Atlanta, Ga., Trey Woodberry, Scott Woodberry, Daniel Woodberry, Claude E. "Chip" Harris, III, Laura Turner of Florence, Rufus O. Harris, Jr., Ruth Elizabeth Pettus, and John N. Harris of Charlotte, NC.

He is predeceased by his wife, Ruth LaRue Harris, and two brothers, Claude E. Harris, Jr. and Rufus O. Harris, Sr.

A memorial service to honor his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Florence.
